KEEPING POOLS BLUE

Balancing Your Pool’s Chemistry for the Winter Months

As the cooler temperatures of October arrive, many pool owners think their maintenance duties are over until spring. However, here in the Phoenix area, the off-season is the most critical time to protect your investment. At Universal Pool Service, we know that a little proactive care now is the secret to a fast, affordable, and algae-free opening next year.

Adjust Your Chlorine Levels

Cooler water and less direct sunlight significantly slow down chlorine consumption. While sanitizer is still necessary to prevent algae, you can typically reduce the levels. We recommend maintaining a free chlorine reading between 1.0 and 3.0 ppm. This adjustment is the crucial first step in your winter pool chemistry plan, preventing algae without over-sanitizing.

Maintain pH and Alkalinity

Think of pH and alkalinity as the foundation of water balance. Before you reduce pump schedules, it’s vital to ensure your pH is stable between 7.4-7.6 and alkalinity is between 80-120 ppm. This prevents the water from becoming corrosive during the winter, protecting your pool’s surfaces and equipment from long-term, costly damage.

Add a Preventive Algaecide

Even in cool water, dormant algae spores are just waiting for a warm spell to turn your pool into a green swamp. After balancing your other levels, adding a dose of a quality, long-lasting winter algaecide provides an essential insurance policy. This single proactive step is often the key to avoiding a frustrating and expensive cleanup in the spring.

Continue to Circulate and Clean

Stagnant water is a breeding ground for problems. Even though the pool is not in use, you should run your pump for 4-6 hours a day to keep the water moving and properly circulated. Continuing to skim leaves and debris is also vital. This circulation is essential to making your winter pool chemistry efforts effective.

Proper off-season care ensures your pool remains an asset, not a liability. If you’d rather enjoy year-round peace of mind, ask Universal Pool Service about our comprehensive maintenance plans. We can take the guesswork out of winterizing and have your pool sparkling for the first warm day of spring.
