Learn About Our Pool Heaters, Part 2

In our last Universal Pool Service blog, we began to go into detail about each of our four pool heating systems we can install for your home pool. Last time we covered solar pool heaters and heat pumps, both environmentally friendly options. Today we want to talk about our two options that heat pools more quickly, but might cost more to run.

Electric Element Pool Heater

As you might guess, and electric pool heater uses electricity to create heat. This heating system is better suited for small pools because of their high cost to run and install. This heating system has the highest monthly expense of the four and is not energy efficient, but the purchase price is generally less than that of the other pool heater systems. These systems are good because they do not rely on outside temperature or weather like solar heaters and heat pumps do, and they do not emit any air pollution like gas heaters do. This is a good option for someone who wants a reliable heater for a small pool that heats water quickly.

Gas Pool Heater

Gas pool heaters use either natural gas or a propane tank to heat the pool and are also the most common type of pool heater. Gas heaters are great for people who want a very specific temperature, as you can control water temperature with a thermostat. This heater also warms the water the quickest and is very reliable. Gas pool heaters are usually the second most expensive type to operate, but are still quite economic compared to electric pool heaters. These heaters also fall on the lower end for initial purchase price but depending if you want your unit aboveground or underground will dictate the installation price.

Now that you’ve had a chance to go in-depth, we’ll give you the TL;DR break down (that’s teen-speak for “Too long; didn’t read.”)

Overview Of The Four Main Types Of Pool Heaters

Solar Pool Heater

  • Pros: No cost to run, low maintenance, long lifespan, environmentally friendly.
  • Cons: Slowest to heat pool, need space and sun for panels, high upfront cost.

Heat Pump Pool Heater

  • Pros: Cheaper to maintain and run than gas or electric, clean energy draws heat from air
  • Cons: Slower to heat than other models, somewhat dependent on weather to work

Gas Pool Heater

  • Pros: Low install cost, works quickest of all heaters, maintain temperature with a thermostat
  • Cons: High monthly cost, not very environmentally friendly

Electric Element Pool Heater

  • Pros: Heats fast without polluting air, cheap to purchase, does not rely on outside temp
  • Cons: Highest monthly costs, not energy efficient, not good for big pools
